UPSC ESE/IES, 2015:
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Engineering Services Examination as a combined competitive examination for recruitment to the services or posts of Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. The exam is conducted for selection engineers for Government of India’s engineering organizations, such as Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Central Engineering Service (CSE), Military Engineering Services (MES), etc.

Eligibility:
Age Eligibility: You need to be between 21 years to 30 years as on 1st January of the exam year. Age relaxations exist as per the government rules.
Academic Qualification Eligibility: You must be a graduate in Engineering form a recognized university. Final year students can also appear in IES exam.
Exam Pattern:
The written exam comprises of 2 sections. Section I consists of only objective type questions and section II comprises conventional papers. Both the papers cover entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines. If you qualify the written examination, personality test of 200 marks is conducted.

UPSC ESE General Ability Test Syllabus:
The standard of paper in General Ability Test is such as may be expected of an Engineering or Science Graduate. The standard of papers in other subjects is approximately of the level of an Engineering Degree Examination of an Indian University. There is no practical examination in any of the subjects.
General Ability Test has two parts with 60 questions in each part.

Part A: General English
The question paper in General English is designed to test your understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.
Part B: General Studies
The paper in General Studies includes knowledge of current events and of such matters as of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The paper also includes questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which you should be able to answer without special study.
